Welcome to Port Douglas Crocs AFL

We are a small but proud junior AFL club that promotes the participation in sport, particularly AFL, to children across both Douglas Shire and the bordering sections of Mareeba Shire. We are a small not for profit club that share the facilities of the Port Douglas sporting complex.

Brief History

The Port Douglas Crocs AFL Club was established in 1989. Following some hard work by some extraordinarily committed and persistent volunteers the ground that is affectionately known as the “Croc pit” was built. At around this time in 1995 the Port Douglas Junior Football Club was set up to run as a separate entity to the Senior Football club. The ultimate goal is to develop our junior players to be a feed in for local players who wished to continue playing AFL at the Senior club.

The Junior Crocs have always managed to have a strong volunteer and sponsorship base, with parents and supporters willing to assist, to keep the club functioning and thriving. This was a contributing factor to why the Junior Crocs managed to be active and participate during the extremely difficult period associated with the Covid 19 pandemic of the 2020 & 2021 seasons.

Over the years, our participation numbers have fluctuated but we managed to field a least one team each season in each age group from Under 8's to Under 18's. Playing membership base generally sits at around 120-140 children.

The Future

Following the Covid 19 pandemic, we predict some strong growth in the short term. We believe a commitment to promote the game working in conjunction AFL Cairns and AFL Queensland will consolidate growth of the game in our region. Following some success introducing a girls’ team to the club in the 2019-21 seasons, the club will continue to offer an alternative sporting participation option for girls in our district. We also hope to work in conjunction with AFL Cape York and AFL QLD to promote the game in our indigenous communities, particularly concentrating on Mossman Gorge and Wujal Wujal with school-based activities and hopefully club based activities.

The Committee is steadfast in their desire to future proof the club and have commenced the process of creating a solid Organisational structure that will be the backbone of retaining volunteers. The club is also in the process of completing a 12 month operational plan to coincide with a 5 year strategic plan that will consolidate our clubs direction. Once these works are completed the club will commence the process of reviewing the club constitution to bring the rules and regulations of the club into the 2020’s.

All this back ground work should place our club in a great position with systems in place to make life easy for new committees to transition and continue the inner running’s of a club at the highest level.

Charity

The club works in conjunction with other clubs and organisations to promote the benefits of children playing team sports and the overall benefits sport has on a community. Some examples;

  • Annual Anzac day raffle with proceeds being split between Mossman RSL and the Junior Crocs
  • Promotion and fundraising of the Pink in the Tropics

The club is committed to creating an inclusive, FUN environment and culture. Where our kids and volunteers feel valued, supported, respected and ultimately wanting to return week in week out to be involved.

It’s more than a game!
It’s about health, fitness, respect, friendships, FUN and community.

Thank you for taking the time to read about our wonderful club. AFL is here to stay and we predict the Junior Crocs will remain a prominent and community driven club for years to come.
